The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has joined a national campaign targeting drunk drivers leading into the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – Leading into the Labor Day weekend, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is joining this year’s national campaign known as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

HCSO has partnered with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for this drunk-driving enforcement campaign. From now until Sept. 3, local law enforcement will
show zero tolerance for impaired driving and will increase patrol throughout the  county.

Over the 2016 Labor Day holiday period, there were 433 crash fatalities  nationwide. Of the fatal crashes, more than one-third (36 percent) involved drivers who were drunk with 0.08-plus blood alcohol concentration. One-fourth (25 percent)  involved drivers who were driving with a BAC almost twice the legal limit.

Age is a particularly risky factor. Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who were killed in crashes over the Labor Day holiday, 47 percent of those fatalities involved drunk drivers with BACs of 0.08 or higher.
