A woman was injured during the encounter, but no deputies were hurt, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

BROOKSVILLE – A woman was injured this afternoon (Aug. 20) when three deputies fired at her after she pointed a shotgun at them, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

Lori Lee Brandon, 49, of Brooksville, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. She has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. Deputies said Brandon will be taken to the Hernando County Detention Center when she is released from the hospital.

None of the three deputies involved – Deputy Gregory Locke, 25; Master Deputy Michael Beckwith, 51; and Sgt. Brandon Ross, 48 – was injured. Locke has been with the Hernando sheriff since October 2013. Beckwith has worked for the department since July 1990. Ross has been a Hernando deputy since March 1994.

Hernando deputies were called to a Cedar Drive home about 2:15 p.m. to help the Brooksville Police Department regarding a suicidal female who had barricaded herself inside the residence. Initial information indicated that the woman was armed with a shotgun and had access to numerous other weapons inside the house. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office SWAT and Crisis Response Teams were in the process of responding to the scene to assist the numerous deputies and Brooksville police officers who were already there.

The initial investigation indicates that the woman came outside and raised and pointed a shotgun at several deputies who were on the perimeter of the residence. Preliminary reports indicate that three sheriff’s deputies fired their weapons.

The woman was injured during the exchange and was subsequently airlifted to a local trauma center. At this time her condition is unknown. No deputies were injured during this incident.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been notified will take over the investigation. All three deputies will be placed on paid administrative leave as protocol dictates.
