Residents from Safe Harbor helped Pinellas deputies and others pick up litter on Saturday (Feb. 25).

HIGHPOINT – More than 120 clients of Safe Harbor, the Pinellas County sheriff’s emergency homeless shelter, worked Saturday (Feb. 25) with other volunteers to pick up litter at eight locations across Pinellas County.

The event concluded with the collection of 13,320 lbs. of trash from across Pinellas County. That total did not include additional recyclables that were collected such as aluminum and metal. All the trash collected was removed from its discarded location and deposited into proper receptacles. Participants were served lunch afterwards. Many won prizes and bicycles donated by the Walmart Supercenter of Largo.

This is the fourth year for the “Take a Bite Out Of Grime” event, during which Safe Harbor clients and others volunteer to pick up litter, starting with the area around the shelter, 14840 49th St. N in the unincorporated Highpoint area. The event gives Safe Harbor clients a chance to give back to the community, it provides a way for them to earn community service hours as part of their volunteer work.

Safe Harbor, which is managed by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, is an emergency homeless shelter and a jail diversion program designed to be a safe haven for those currently homeless and who require services to get back on their feet. It has an average population of about 400 men and women.
