Today (Dec. 24) is the first day of the eight-day “festival of lights.” A Chanukah Family Festival that’s open to the public is scheduled Tuesday (Dec. 27) at Sundial.

TAMPA BAY – The eight-day Hanukah (or Chanukah) “festival of lights” begins today (Dec. 24).

The festival honors the triumph Judas Maccabeus over Antiochus IV, a Greek ruler who sought to impose Grecian culture on the Jews, and the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem. According to tradition, the temple held a lamp that had enough oil for only one day, but burned for eight. The miracle is celebrated by the nightly lighting of a menorah that has nine arms – eight to commemorate the temple lamp and one to provide the flame to light the others.

Chabad Jewish Center of Greater St. Petersburg will hold a Menorah Lighting and Chanukah Celebration from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 27) at Sundial, 153 Second Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Scheduled entertainment includes the African High Flyers (as seen on America’s Got Talent), Sam Glaser in concert, a Menorah Lighting ceremony, latkes, doughnuts, Kosher concessions from the Locale Market, crafts, face painting and more. The free event is open to the public.
