Eric Atwater has re-opened the longtime family business, this time on 34th Street S.

ST. PETERSBURG — Atwater’s Best Barbecue and Soul Food has opened at 4301 34th St. S in the Skyway Mall, the Weekly Challenger has reported.

It is a revival of the popular Atwater restaurant and cafeteria, renowned for the soul food that reached not only its Midtown neighborhood but throughout the city. Eric Atwater, son of the original owners, the late Elzo Sr. and Mattie Atwater, is the force behind the reopening.

Atwater never has stopped dreaming about reestablishing the longtime business, he told the Challenger. His parents began the family enterprise in the 1960s, when they bought the old Harlem Restaurant on 22nd Street S. In the 1970s, they opened the Atwater Cafeteria on Ninth Street and 22nd Avenue S.

The restaurant is open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. You can find Atwater’s on Facebook, or for more information, call (727) 906-3200 or (727) 520-3030. To learn more, see the Weekly Challenger.
