Larry Ahern Files Bill to Protect ALF Residents

Larry Ahern | Florida House | Florida Legislature

Rep. Larry Ahern, R-Seminole, filed a bill Wednesday (Feb. 25) designed to protect residents of assisted living facilities from poor care.

SEMINOLE – State Rep. Larry Ahern announced that he has filed legislation to provide necessary reforms for protecting ALF residents. This legislation revises the fines imposed for licensure violations, clarifies existing enforcement tools, and requires additional inspections for communities having significant violations.

Some highlights of the bill:

  • Creation of an ALF website through the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, which will provide consumer information.
  • Clarification of responsibility for assuring that mental health residents in an ALF receive necessary services.
  • Creation and regular updating of a community living support plan for ALF residents.
  • Provisions for AHCA-imposed fines against a facility that does not show good cause for terminating an individual’s residency.

“This bill creates a balance between the safety of residents, the agency’s ability to identify and solve problems, and the owners of the communities to create more comfortable and safe environments, allowing residents to age in place for a longer period of time,” said Ahern, R-Seminole.
