CLEARWATER – City officials are scheduled to dedicate a public art installation at Fire Station 45.

The dedication will be followed by a trolley tour of other public art in Clearwater.

Accumulate, a unique suspended sculpture with a salute to fire fighting history, was designed by Aaron Stephan, represents the most recent commission of the city’s public art and design program.

Accumulate was created with hundreds of glass spheres and multi-colored fire hoses representing the practice of drip-drying fire hoses after use. Purchase and installation of the sculpture cost about $107,000.

Clearwater has been commissioning public art as part of an ordinance-driven program, which mandates that no less than 1 percent of all eligible capital improvement projects is reserved for the creation and maintenance of on-site public art. Artists, like Stephan, are selected through a national call to artists and are required to research the project and site at which the completed piece of art will reside.

There will be a dedication ceremony from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday (Dec. 9) for the Accumulate sculpture at Fire Station 45, 1140 Court St. During this ceremony, visitors will get to see the sculpture and take pictures. After the short ceremony, those interested will be able to board a trolley and be taken around Clearwater to see other unique pieces of art, such as the decorated signal
boxes and new sculpture recently installed outside the Main Library.

The sculpture can be viewed by anyone visiting Station 45.
