County Sets Session on Dunedin Causeway Bridge Replacement

Dunedin Causeway Bridge | Dunedin | Pinellas County

The workshop is designed to show options for replacing the bridges and hear residents’ thoughts.

DUNEDIN – Pinellas County is hosting a workshop in this city to show viable options for the replacement of the Dunedin Causeway bridges and solicit input from the community.

The workshop is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (March 29) at the Hale Activity Center, 330 Douglas Ave., Dunedin. The workshop will give residents, business owners, property owners and others interested in the project an opportunity to comment on the alternatives for the bridges that are currently being considered.

Members of the project team will be on hand throughout the evening to explain the alternatives and answer questions about the study process, engineering aspects of the bridges and environmental and recreational considerations that may be affected by the possible alternatives. Residents can watch a brief PowerPoint presentation about the alternatives anytime during the workshop. Attendees can also view the alternatives using virtual reality technology, and 3-D models of the proposed replacement bridges will be on display.

The limits of the study extend from west of Royal Stewart Arms Parkway on Honeymoon Island to Gary Place/Gary Circle on Ward Island. The ongoing study is focused on improvements to the existing bascule, or movable, bridge over the intracoastal waterway, and the fixed tide relief bridge, which connect Honeymoon Island State Park to the city of Dunedin. No improvements are proposed along the causeway beaches.

Both bridges were built in 1963 and are now considered functionally obsolete due in part to their narrow width. The bridges also exhibit structural deficiencies.

The county is conducting the study in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. Completion of the study will qualify future phases of the project for federal funding.
