Tampa will be the site of a sister event to the national Peoples Climate March on Saturday (April 29).

TAMPA – More than two dozen Tampa Bay organizations will spearhead a march to urge Tampa to commit to 100 percent clean, renewable energy and to raise awareness about climate change and its regional impacts, and to provide avenues for people to take action.

The Tampa Peoples Climate March is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will begin at Lykes Gaslight Square Park, 410 N Franklin St. Participants will write letters and gather petition signatures urging local decision makers to commit Tampa to 100 percent clean energy. Finally, the demonstration will move to MacDill Park, 100 N Ashley Drive, which will host local art installations and climate science exhibits.

Scheduled speakers: Pat Kemp, Hillsborough County commissioner; Carrie Henriquez, office of Tampa City Council member Guido Maniscalco; Dr. Rick Garrity, retired Hillsborough County environmental protection commission director; Jerry Green, Florida outreach director with Votevets.org; Sheridan Murphy, Florida American Indian Movement; Frank Jackalone, Sierra Club Florida director; and Md. Ashiqur Rahman, USF Provost’s postdoctoral scholar.

The Tampa march is a sister event in solidarity with the national march scheduled for Saturday (April 29) in Washington, DC. The national march is spearheaded by the Peoples Climate Movement, which organized the first march On Sept. 21, 2014, on the eve of the UN Climate Summit. As heads of state from around the world gathered, 400,000 people from every walk of life marched through the streets of New York City demanding bold and urgent action of the global climate crisis.

Tampa march organizers say on their Facebook page that the movement is still important in face of the “Trump Administration’s all-out assault on the environment, science, and our nation’s most vulnerable communities will not stop us from moving forward.”

Tampa is one of the most at risk cities in the world when it comes to climate change, organizers said. Tampa, they said, is in a unique position to push Florida forward on climate change adaptation and mitigation.
