A citywide tree recycling event is scheduled for Jan. 6. The trees are turned into free mulch.

ST. PETERSBURG – City residents are encouraged to extend the life of their Christmas trees this holiday season by participating in the Sanitation department’s free annual Christmas tree collection event Jan. 6.

St. Petersburg residents may also drop off their undecorated trees at one of the city’s five brush sites for free. All collected trees will be turned into mulch, which is free to residents at the brush sites.

Residents should remove all lights, ornaments, and other decorations from the tree before placing it out for collection. Tree stands and plastic tree disposal bags should also be removed.

Trees should be placed for collection in the same location where residents receive trash collection: if trash is picked up at the curb, trees should be placed at the curb. If trash is picked up in the alley, trees should be placed in the alley; trees should not lean against electrical poles, trash containers, water meters, etc. Trees should be loose and not placed inside trash or recycling containers. Trees should be set out before 7 a.m. Jan. 6. If your tree is not picked up on Jan. 6, you may arrange a special collection by calling (727) 893-7398 during normal business hours.

This is the only day sanitation crews will hold the citywide Christmas tree collection. After Jan. 6, residents will need to call (727) 893-7398 to arrange a special collection.

Residents of apartments and condos should check with property managers on proper disposal of Christmas trees.

Undecorated trees may also be taken to one of the city’s five brush sites:

  • 1000 62nd Ave. NE
  • 7750 26th Ave. N
  • 2500 26th Ave. S
  • 4015 Dr. M.L. King Jr. St. S
  • 2453 20th Ave. N

Brush sites are open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Brush sites are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Residents should bring a photo ID and water bill for proof of residency.
