Delaney Reynolds, teenage founder of the “Sink or Swim Project,” and St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman will be featured speakers at the event.

ST. PETERSBURG – Delaney Reynolds, teenage founder of “The Sink or Swim Project” highlighting the dangers posed by sea level rise, heads a line-up of insurance, real estate and policy experts who will address risks and consequences of natural catastrophes at the Second Annual Industry Conference on May 24 in St. Petersburg.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Institute for Strategic Policy Solutions at St. Petersburg College and the Florida Association for Insurance Reform. It will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the Vinoy St. Petersburg Resort & Golf Club, 501 Fifth Ave. NE. Advance registration is required.

Reynolds, a Miami high school senior whose Tedx talk has gone viral, will present the conference luncheon keynote address, along with her father, Robert, a south Florida insurance broker whom she credits with inspiring her to get involved in climate change issues after a family boat trip in the Florida Keys. Also on the program is St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman.

They will join top executives from reinsurance and ratings agencies, market and financial analysts, and real estate experts in a series of interactive, fast-paced panel discussions of risks, opportunities and solutions as well as the potential impact of each.

Florida, with its long history of hurricane exposure, is all-too-familiar with the economic impact of higher property insurance rates, which affect consumers, corporations, local businesses and vendors, impacting cash flow, margins and return on investment. High rates harm real estate values and negatively impact the ability of Florida’s workers to find affordable housing.

But sea level rise is adding a new element of risk to the natural catastrophe equation. FAIR’s Second Annual Industry Conference will address strategies for protecting Floridians from uninsured risk and keeping the state’s economy resilient in the wake of potential catastrophic storms. Speakers and panelists will provide vital information on specific insurance remedies, implementation and funding of specific mitigation initiatives and how to educate consumers on potential risks and protections.
