Shorecrest Names New Head of School

Nancy Spencer | Shorecrest Preparatory School | Education

Nancy Spencer currently serves as associate head of school at Westminster School in Simsbury, CT, where she has been in various roles since 2005.

ST. PETERSBURG – The Shorecrest Preparatory School Board of Trustees has appointed Nancy L. Spencer as its head of school effective July 1, 2020.

Spencer will succeed current Head of School Mike Murphy, who announced earlier this year that he would retire after a 14-year tenure, at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Shorecrest enlisted Carney, Sandoe & Associates, a national educational search firm, to help with the head of school search. Elizabeth Samuelson and Beth Vivio, members of the Shorecrest Board of Trustees, co-chaired the Head of School Search Committee made up of parent/guardian, faculty/staff, student, alumni and board representatives. The four-month search produced a response from education leaders from across the U.S. and abroad. After thoroughly vetting many highly qualified candidates, the Shorecrest Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the search committee’s recommendation to appoint Spencer as its next head of school.

Spencer will serve as the school’s seventh head since it was founded in 1923.

In the head of school role, Spencer will carry forward the school’s vision of creating a legacy of inclusive, innovative, and transformational education that ignites the potential of all learners. Spencer will also further Shorecrest’s strategic initiatives in the areas of equity and inclusion; innovative teaching and learning; and financial equilibrium, affordability and sustainability.

Spencer has more than two decades of independent school experience and brings a wealth of experience from teaching, coaching, admissions, marketing and college counseling. Spencer currently serves as associate head of school at Westminster School in Simsbury, CT, where she has been in various roles since 2005. During the previous 10 years, Spencer was director of admissions and financial aid at Bullis School outside of Washington, D.C.

In addition to her wide breadth and depth of independent school experience, Spencer has an impressive educational background with a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University, a Master of Arts from Yale University and a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management.

Dennis Leary, chair of the Shorecrest Board of Trustees, said, “After an extensive nationwide search and a thorough search process, the board firmly believes that Nancy Spencer is an absolutely wonderful fit for Shorecrest, and that she embraces the school’s mission, values and culture. Both she and our school have accomplished much over the past 25 years, and we are excited about the future of Shorecrest under Nancy’s leadership. Nancy has the vision, experience, temperament and passion to lead Shorecrest to Be More into the next decade and beyond.”

Spencer said, “I am thrilled to be joining the Shorecrest community. It’s such an exciting opportunity to build on the strengths of this amazing educational environment. My husband, John and I look forward to being a part of the Shorecrest family,.”

Founded in 1923, Shorecrest is a coed, nonsectarian, PK-12 independent school in St. Petersburg.
