Tennis, Science, Art Offered at St. Pete Specialty Camps

The specialty camps are in addition to St. Petersburg’s elementary and middle school summer camps.

ST. PETERSBURG – Have your kids try something new this summer.

The St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation Department is offering specialty camps at select recreation centers along with the Elementary and Middle School Camps offered throughout the summer until Aug. 10.

Lake Vista Recreation Center is offering a youth tennis camp facilitated by Sowing Seeds Tennis Program. The camp runs from 8:30 a.m. until noon June 18 through  June 22.  The camp rate is $100 for the week. The tennis camp will focus on building tennis skills for novice tennis athletes. Roberts Recreation Center is offering these specialty camps this summer:

Summer Art Camp, facilitated by the Color Wheelz, offers two sessions at the center.

  • In each themed session, kids will create a 16 inch by 20 inch canvas using acrylic paint. They will also decorate keepsake aprons and create projects using watercolors, charcoal pencils, oil pastels and more.
  • The Summer Splash session, which focuses on beach scenery and sea life, runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 19 to June 22. The Zoo to You session, which focuses on zoo animals and creatures, run from noon to 3:30 p.m. July 10 to July 13. Cost for each session is $140.

Science Camps, facilitated by Mad Science, give kids the opportunity to explore science and invent something. There are two sessions offered during the summer.

  • The Eureka! the Inventor’s Camp gives kids the opportunity to invent something new through experiments with bridges, forts, flying machines and a trebuchet. Participants get to take home mad science catapults, circuit mazes and a mystery key. The session runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday (June 12) through June 15.
  • Kids can also enjoy the Mad Machine & Engineering Mania session that gives them a chance to build new things and discover simple and complex machines and how to use them. This session runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 17 through July 20. Cost of each session is $90.
