There were two separate head-on collisions in the three-vehicle pileup, FHP troopers say.

CITRUS COUNTY – A teenager died and a Clearwater woman was critically injured in two head-on crashes that began with a wrong-way driver on U.S. 19, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Names of those involved have not been released. The dead man is a 19 year old from Crystal River who was driving a pickup truck. Critically injured in the crash was a 66 year-old woman from Clearwater who was driving a sedan. The driver of an SUV, a 53-year-old Crystal River woman, and her passenger, a 33-year-old Crystal River woman, suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened about 6:30 a.m. today (Aug. 23) on U.S. 19 N south of Indian Woods Path in Citrus County.

Troopers said the Clearwater woman was driving her sedan north in the southbound travel lanes of U.S. 19 when she collided head-on with the pickup truck driven by the Crystal River teen.

After the initial crash, troopers said, the SUV, which was traveling south in the southbound lanes hit the pickup truck head on because the driver did not see the crashed vehicles in the dark.
