Two From Tampa Seriously Injured in Fatal 5-Vehicle Crash on I-4

Fatal Polk Crash | Florida Highway Patrol | TB Reporter

The pickup truck in which they were riding was hit nearly head on, FHP troopers say.

POLK COUNTY – Two men from Tampa were seriously injured and a third suffered minor injuries in a five-vehicle crash on I-4 that killed a Lakeland woman, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The two Tampa men – one 48 years old; the other, 44 – were passengers in a pickup truck that was involved in the crash. The truck driver, a 55-year-old Tampa man, suffered minor injuries.

A 22-year-old Lakeland woman who was driving one of the vehicles died at a hospital where she was taken after the crash. Also seriously injured in the crash were a 55-year-old Port Charlotte woman and a 38-year-old Orlando man. A 55-year-old Port Charlotte man suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened about 6:40 a.m. Thursday (June 4) on I-4 east of U.S. 98 at about mile marker 32 in Polk County. The crash closed eastbound lanes of I-4 until about 10:46 a.m..

Troopers said the Lakeland woman was driving a sedan west on I-4 in the center lane when she changed to the inside lane. The rear of her car hit the right front of a sedan driven by the Orlando man.

The impact pushed both cars into the median. The car driven by the Lakeland woman broke the cable barrier and continued into the eastbound lanes where it hit nearly head-on the pickup truck driven by the Tampa man.

After that impact, a sedan driven by the Port Charlotte man swerved to avoid hitting the pickup truck. At the same time, a tractor-trailer was unable to avoid a crash or stop and hit both the pickup truck and the Port Charlotte man’s car.

This final impact caused the pickup truck to travel across the median.

FHP Investigators are requesting any additional witnesses to this fatal crash on I-4 to please contact the FHP by calling (813) 558-1800.
