Two Die, Three Injured From Five-Vehicle Crash on I-4
The crash closed both both directions of I-4 for about five hours.
POLK COUNTY – Two people died and three were injured, one seriously, from a five-vehicle crash on I-4 (State Road 400) on Friday (July 31) morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The deceased were a 37-year-old man from Orlando, who was driving one of the cars, and his passenger, a 37-year-old woman from Davenport. The driver died at the scene of the crash. His passenger died at an area hospital. Both were wearing seat belts.
Seriously injured was a 22-year-old man from Lakeland, who was driving one of the vehicles. Suffering minor injuries were a 25-year-old woman from Estero and a 57-year-old man from Tampa. The woman was driving a sedan. The man was driving a tractor-trailer.
The crash happened about 10:03 a.m. on westbound I-4 (SR 400) at about mile marker 33 in Polk County.
Troopers said the Lakeland man was driving a sedan west on I-4 when he failed to maintain his lane and collided with a tractor-trailer driven by a 56-year-old man from Brantford in Ontario, Canada. The force of the impact pushed the sedan into the center median where it collided with the cable barrier. The sedan went over the cable barrier and into the eastbound lanes of I-4.
Once in the eastbound lanes, the sedan continued traveling west and collided nearly head-on with the sedan driven by the Orlando man.
After the impact, the sedan driven by the Orlando man stopped in the path of the car driven by the Estero woman, which collided with the rear of the Orlando man’s sedan. The Orlando man’s sedan overturned onto the outside shoulder.
The tractor-trailer driven by the Tampa man hit the left side of the car driven by the Lakeland man, then traveled into the median where it hit the cable barrier, crossed the westbound lanes, then entered the outside shoulder and collided with a fence.
The crash closed both directions of I-4 until about 3 p.m.
