Tampa Man Accused of DUI, Hit and Run After U.S. 41 Crash
FHP troopers say the other driver, a Gibsonton woman, was critically injured in the crash.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Gibsonton woman was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the arrest of a Tampa man.
The 33-year-old woman was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Martin Javier Garcia Trujillo, 38, of Tampa, suffered minor injuries in the crash. He was arrested and charged with two counts of DUI with Property Damage and one count each of DUI with serious Bodily Injury and Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Serious Bodily Injury.
The crash happened about 11:44 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 23) on U.S. 41 in Hillsborough County.
Troopers said Trujillo was driving a sedan north on U.S. 41 at a high rate of speed when he overtook the sedan the Gibsonton woman was driving. Trujillo’s sedan hit the rear of the other car, which then collided with the concrete barrier on the outside shoulder of the road. The car then crossed back across the road and hit the inside concrete barrier, which propelled it back across U.S. 41 where it collided with the outside concrete barrier for the final time.
Trujillo fled the scene but only got about half a mile down the road before the car became inoperative because of crash damage.
