One Dead, Two Injured in Head-On Crash on Cortez Boulevard
One driver was in the oncoming lane because he was passing slower traffic, according to FHP troopers.
HERNANDO COUNTY – A Bradenton man died Saturday (May 23) in a crash caused when he drove into the oncoming lane while trying to pass slower vehicles, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
A 51-year-old man from Bradenton died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. The other driver, a 22-year-old man from Dade City, suffered serious injuries. His passenger, a 20-year-old Dade city man, suffered minor injuries. It is unclear if both were taken to a hospital.
The crash happened about 6 p.m. on Cortez Boulevard east of Westlake Boulevard in Hernando County.
The deceased man was driving a sedan west on Cortez when he drove into the eastbound lane to pass other westbound traffic.
As a result, troopers said, he hit a pickup truck nearly head-on in the eastbound lane of Cortez.
