Both vehicles tried to avoid the other but were not successful and collided nearly head-on, according to FHP troopers.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Lutz man was seriously injured this morning (June 15) in a wrong-way crash on I-275, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
One driver, a 25-year-old man from Lutz, was seriously injured. The other driver, a 47-year-old man from Oxford, suffered minor injuries.
The crash happened about 3:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-275 approaching Bearss Avenue in Hillsborough County. The crash closed the northbound lanes of I-275 until about 5:30 a.m. The southbound lanes were closed until about 9:50 a.m.
Troopers said the Lutz man was driving a sedan north in the center lane of southbound I-275. The Oxford man was driving a tractor-trailer hauling apple cider south in the center lane of southbound I-275.
As the two vehicles approached each other, they both tried to avoid a collision but were unsuccessful. The two collided nearly head on.
After the impact, the tractor-trailer collided with the barrier wall and caught fire. The sedan came to final rest along the outside shoulder.
