Indian Shores Police Officer Runs Over Man Lying on Beach
The 66-year-old man had serious injuries, Pinellas deputies say.
INDIAN SHORES – Deputies are investigating a traffic crash involving an Indian Shores police officer who drove over a man lying on the beach, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
William Koziarz, 66, of Michigan, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Indian Shores police Officer Natasha Hindman, 27, was not injured. She has worked for the Indian Shore Police Department since Jan. 20, 2018.
The crash happened about 5:53 p.m. Friday (May 8) south of the 193rd Avenue beach access in Indian Shores.
Deputies said Hindman was driving a fully marked 2018 Ford Explorer police cruiser west on the 193rd Avenue beach access and onto the beach. Hindman turned southwest and to start her beach patrol.
As Hindman drove along the sand at low speed, the left side tires of her cruiser drove over the hips of Koziarz, who was lying on the sand.
Hindman stopped and provided aid until paramedics arrived.
Investigators say neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash.
The investigation is continuing.
