LARGO – A driver ended up in a retention pond at the Pinellas County Courthouse on Wednesday (Sept. 2) when his boot got caught in his truck’s accelerator, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver, a 64-yeawr-old Largo man, was not injured. Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office helped him escape his pickup truck, which became completely submerged.
The crash happened about 2:35 p.m. at the Pinellas courthouse, 14250 49th St. N, in Largo.
Troopers said the driver was southbound in the parking lot when he tried to pull into a parking space. His boot became entangled with the accelerator, causing the pickup to “rapidly” accelerate.
The truck crossed a concrete curb and sidewalk then hit a fence around a retention pond. The truck continued traveling after hitting the fence and “vaulted” into the retention pond, becoming completely submerged.
