About 100 gallons of fuel spilled into the Intercoastal Waterway, deputies say.

PINELLAS COUNTY – One woman suffered minor injuries and some fuel was spilled when a boat exploded Sunday (Dec. 1) at a Largo area marina, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Hope Weil, 21, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with minor injuries.

The explosion happened about 3:55 p.m. at the Indian Springs Marina, 15151 113th Ave. N, in the unincorporated Largo area.

Deputies said the boat, a 2005 Four Winds 25-foot deck boat with an inboard engine, had just filled up with fuel at the Indian Springs Marina. During the process, some fuel had overflowed and spilled.

The owner of the boat, 50-year-old David Weil, told deputies that, after cleaning up, he tried to start the boat. Mr. Weil said he tried to crank the boat several times before it suddenly exploded. Weil said the blast threw him from the boat onto the dock. He was not injured.

Mr. Weil’s daughter, Hope, was standing near the bow when the explosion happened. The force of the blast caused her to fall into the water. When Mr. Weil realized his daughter was thrown in the water, he
immediately dived in and rescued her.

When the explosion occurred, Mr. Weil’s wife and a family friend were standing nearby. Both were knocked down as a result of the blast, but neither suffered any injuries.

The explosion caused the fiberglass boat to catch fire. Deputies said Indian Spring Marina staff tried to put out the fire using multiple fire extinguishers. However, the blaze was too intense and the fire resulted in the boat’s partially sinking at the dock.

Largo Fire Rescue responded and firefighters were able to put out the fire.

Deputies said about 100 gallons of fuel spilled into the Intercostal Waterway as a result of the fire. Afterwards, marina personnel were able to remove the boat from the water and bring it on shore to avoid any further hazards.

The cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
