Weeki Wachee Man Charged in Jewelry Store Burglary
Hernando deputies say he confessed and blamed the crime on his drug addiction.
SPRING HILL – A Weeki Wachee man was arrested after he confessed to using bricks to break into a jewelry store, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.
Buster Lanard Petaway, 53, of Weeki Wachee, was charged with Burglary of an Unoccupied Dwelling with Damage in excess of $1,000 and Grand Theft.
Deputies said they were called about 2 a.m. Weddnesday (March 18) for a report of an unknown man throwing bricks at a front window of Nature Coast Jewelers, 7223 Forest Oaks Blvd. in Spring Hill.
The man was able to break the window and get into the business. Once inside, the man, later identified as Petaway, used a brick to break into glass cases from which he stole various items of jewelry. Petaway left with the stolen jewelry and got into a waiting vehicle. He left the area before deputies arrived.
Later that morning, with the help of video surveillance, detectives said they identified the getaway vehicle.
When deputies arrived at Petaway’s home, he surrendered and confessed to committing the burglary, saying it was caused by his drug addiction.
Detectives said they found a majority of the stolen jewelry inside Petaway’s home. All the stolen jewelry was returned to the store owner.
