Teen ,16, Accidentally Shot Nephew, 9, Pinellas Deputies Say
The 9-year-old was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Pinellas deputies say.
LEALMAN – A St. Petersburg teen was arrested after he accidentally shot his nephew, the PInellas County Sheriff’s Office said.
The 9-year-old boy was taken to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The teen, 16, was charged with one count each of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Grand Theft of a Firearm, and Violation of Probation for Burglary.
The shooting happened about 1:45 p.m. Friday (May 22) at the Red Roof Inn, 4999 49th St. N in the unincorporated Lealman area.
Deputies said that, when deputies they arrived at the motel, they found the 9-year-old boy who who had been shot. The child’s 16-year-old uncle had been handling a firearm – later found to be stolen – in the hotel room. The gun accidentally discharged hitting his nephew in the arm.
The teen fled and discarded the firearm.
According to deputies, the teen was found nearby and witnesses were able to identify him as the shooter. K-9 deputies conducted a search and found the gun.
