She was thrown from her bike after it hit the garbage truck, Pinellas deputies say.

MADEIRA BEACH – A woman from Virginia was injured this morning (May 23) when her bicycle crashed into a garbage truck on Madeira Beach, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Julie Henning, 44, of Alexandria, VA, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with critical injuries. She was wearing a helmet.

The crash happened about 7:30 a.m. at 129th Avenue W and Gulf Boulevard on Madeira Beach.

Deputies said Henning was riding her bicycle in the designated bike lane northbound over John’s Pass Bridge on Gulf Boulevard approaching 129th Avenue W.

According to a witness and the garbage truck passenger, Henning was unable to stop at the base of the hill after crossing the bridge. Henning struck the passenger side of the Madeira Beach city garbage truck, throwing her from her bicycle.

Impairment and speed do not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation continues.
