Man Charged in Stabbing Death on Peyton Place
Three children and a mail carrier found the deceased man, Hernando deputies say.
BROOKSVILLE – A man has been charged in connection with the stabbing death of another man who was found lying wounded in grass on Peyton Place in Brooksville, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.
The deceased man, whose name was withheld, died at a trauma center where he was flown after he was found.
James Dean Croft, 48, was charged with one count of Third Degree Murder. He has refused to provide a statement to detectives.
Deputies said that they and emergency medical personnel were sent to the 19000 block of Peyton Place about 5:22 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 22), for a stabbing.
The caller, a mail carrier, reported turning on to Peyton Place and seeing three children looking at a man who was lying in the grass. The mail carrier heard screaming and a male voice say, “Help, I’m dying.”
The mail carrier approached the man and saw he was bleeding profusely. The mail carrier called 911.
When deputies arrived, they began searching for the suspect, who was described as a white male wearing blue jean shorts and no shirt. Witnesses saw a suspect walking away from the scene at a fast pace.
Patrol deputies and K-9 teams flooded the area.
Cpl. Steve Miller deployed his partner, K9 Justice. Shortly after being deployed, Justice found Croft hiding behind a residence on Sawdust Lane.
