INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – Deputies arrested an Indian Rocks Beach man who shot and killed a friend he said he had mistaken for a burglar, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Jose Ruben Mayorga Ruana, 35, of St. Petersburg, died at the scene of a gunshot wound.
Justin William Miller, 40, of Indian Rocks Beach, was arrested and charged with one count of Manslaughter.
Deputies said they were called to Miller’s home on Bay Pine Boulevard about 4:44 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 22). When they arrived, they found Mr. Ruana dead.
Miller and Mr. Ruana were friends who had been drinking at a bar earlier that evening. After drinking, detectives said, the two returned to Miller’s home.
At some point, Miller thought there was an unknown intruder in his home and shot the man in his living room. The man turned out to be Mr. Ruana.
Detectives said there was no evidence of a burglary or an intruder at the home.
