Hillsborough Deputies Arrest 34 in DUI/BUI Crackdown Over Memorial Day Weekend
Hillsborough deputies and other law enforcement officers made almost 600 traffic stops during Operatoin Surf ‘N’ Turf.
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – Deputies and other law enforcement officers arrested 34 people over Memorial Day weekend as part of a crackdown on drunken driving and impaired boating, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Hillsborough County ranked as the top county in Florida for alcohol-related driving incidents the years of 2014 through 2018. In an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related driving and boating incidents, high visibility enforcement was conducted over the Memorial Day weekend.
“Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle or a vessel under the influence is extremely dangerous, not only to the person driving but everyone else around them,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “During Operation Surf ‘N’ Turf, we wanted to make sure deputies were visible to everyone out celebrating the holiday in hopes of deterring people from driving under the influence and quickly catching those who chose to break the law. After taking 30 intoxicated people off of our roadways and waterways, I believe this operation was a success.”
Hillsborough deputies ran Operation Surf ‘N’ Turn in partnership with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Florida Highway Patrol, Tampa Police Department, Temple Terrace Police Department, Plant City Police Department, University of South Florida Police and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The wolf pack ran from Friday (May 22) through Monday (May 25).
Of the 34 arrested, a total of 27 people were arrested on the road and seven were arrested on the water.
Out of nearly 600 traffic stops conducted during Operation Surf ‘N’ Turf, law enforcement officers issued 173 citations and 421 warnings. Among the motorists stopped, 23 were arrested for DUI, three of which were wrong-way drivers. Four drivers were arrested for unrelated crimes including an outstanding warrant and felony drug possession.
The HCSO Marine Unit, along with the FWC, issued 25 citations and 43 warnings to boaters stopped on the water. A total of seven people were arrested for BUI. Deputies conducted 43 safety inspections of boats.
