Gulfport Man Accused in U.S. 19 Hit and Run That Injured Bicyclist
Witnesses followed him after he fled the scene, Pinellas Park police say.
PINELLAS PARK – A Gulfport man has been arrested and charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash on U.S. 19 that seriously injured a bicyclist, according to the Pinellas Park Police Department.
The bicyclist, John Turley, 60, was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in serious, but stable condition. The driver and his passenger were not injured.
Timothy Manzi, 50, of Gulfport, was charged with one count each of Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Serious Bodily Injury and Driving on a Suspended License. Police said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and DUI charges are pending against Turley.
The crash happened about 8:50 p.m. on Friday (May 15) in the 7600 block of southbound U.S. 19 N in Pinellas Park.
Police said Turley was riding across U.S. 19 while trying to cross the roadway when he was hit by a vehicle driven by Manzi.
Manzi did not stop but left the scene, followed by witnesses. Officers said they were able to quickly find and stop fleeing vehicle a distance away from the crash scene.
