The deceased man had been on life support since the Aug. 23 incident, Pinellas deputies say.

INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – A Clearwater man died Wednesday (Sept. 2) of injuries he suffered in a fight outside a bar on Indian Rocks Beach.

Tommy Lee Shytle, 56, had been in critical condition on life support since the Aug. 23 incident.

Shawn Steven Sokol, 35, of Redington Beach, was in the Pinellas County Jail where he had been since the incident. He was charged with one count each of Aggravated Battery and Loitering and Prowling. The Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office has been notified of Mr. Shytle’s death.

Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies said they were called to Indian Rocks Beach on Aug. 23 for an altercation at JD’s on the Rocks, 125 Gulf Blvd. When they arrived, they found Mr. Shytle lying in the parking lot with a serious injury to his head.

Deputies said Sokol and a friend had been drinking at the bar. Sokol’s friend became disruptive in the bar and challenged Mr. Shytle, another bar patron, to a fight outside in the bar’s parking lot.

When Mr. Shytle came out of the bar, Sokol was already outside and standing off to the side out of Mr. Shytle’s view. Deputies said Sokol suddenly ran up and struck Mr. Shytle in the face with a full force punch. Witnesses said Mr. Shytle was unaware of Sokol’s attack and was unable to defend himself.

The force of the punch caused Mr. Shytle to fall onto the ground where he hit his head on the asphalt parking lot.

Sokol fled the scene after punching Mr. Shytle but deputies found him, hiding nearby.
