Hernando under Tropical Storm Watch

Hernando County officials have declared a state of emergency because of the possible effects from Hurricane Matthew. County offices will close at noon today (Oct. 6) and remain closed Friday (Oct. 7).

HERNANDO COUNTY – Officials from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office emergency management team are alerting residents that the county has been placed under a tropical storm watch.

As a result, a local state of emergency has been declared for Hernando County, effective at 5:30 p.m. Monday (Oct. 5).

According to the National Hurricane Center, the path of Hurricane Matthew has shifted west. On Friday (Oct. 7), impacts to Hernando County may include:

  • * Maximum potential sustained winds of 40 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph.
    * Rainfall (expected to be less than one inch).
    * Because of offshore flow, no storm surge is forecast.
    * Residents should prepare for tropical storm force winds. Any items outdoors that could be hazardous, should be brought indoors.
    * Expect power outages and plan accordingly.
