The man suffered a medical emergency before the crash.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Zephyrhills man died in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday (Dec. 7), the Florida Highway Patrol said.

James R. Smith, 70, of Zephyrhills, died at the scene.

Mr. Smith was driving a 2007 GMC pickup north on State Road 39 north of Patrinostro Road when he suffered a medical emergency and lost control of the truck. The truck left the road and went onto the shoulder where it first hit a mailbox and then a ditch before becoming airborne and colliding with a tree, troopers said.
