Zephyrhills Man Dead After Wrong-Way Crash

His passenger is in critical condition. The other driver received minor injuries.

OSCEOLA COUNTY – A Zephyrhills man is dead and another man is in critical condition after a head-on. wrong-way crash on State Road 60 on Saturday (Jan. 13) morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Michael Van Pelt, 29, of Zephyrhills, was killed in the crash. His passenger, Ronald Higgins, 43, of Dade City, is in critical condition at Osceola Regional Hospital where he was taken after the crash. Anthony Alexander, 31, of Winter Haven, the other driver, suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital.

The crash happened about 3:45 a.m. on SR 60 in Osceola County. Troopers said Mr. Van Pelt was driving a 2016 Dodge west in the eastbound SR 60. Alexander was driving a 2017 semi truck east on SR 60. The Dodge struck the semi head on.

It is unclear if alcohol or other impairment was involved. Test results are pending.
