ST. PETERSBURG – Pinellas sheriff’s deputies are investigating an early morning crash in which a wrong-way driver hit a deputy’s cruiser.

Neither deputy was injured. The driver of the other vehicle, Peter S. Sperico, 52, of 138 Davison Ave. NE, was taken to Northside Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said paramedics told them Sperico had an extremely low blood sugar level.

The crash happened about 1:30 this morning (Dec.20). Deputis Martin Eisner, who was driving, and Randall Dorr were on-duty traveling southbound on 71st Street N approaching the intersection of 62nd Avenue N in their marked 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe cruiser.

Investigators say that the deputies were making a left eastbound turn from 71st Street N onto 62nd Avenue N on a green traffic light when a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling the wrong-way on northbound 71st struck the front driver side of the deputies’ cruiser.

Investigators reviewed the cruiser’s dash cam video and confirmed that Eisner was driving at normal speeds in non-emergency mode at the time of the crash. Investigators said they do not suspect that impairment or speed were factors in the crash.
