Wrong-Way Driver Dies in Plant City Crash

It is unknown why the driver was on the wrong side of the road, the Plant City Police Department said.

PLANT CITY – One man is dead as the result of a wrong-way crash late Monday (May 14) night, the Plant City Police Department said.

The male driver of the Volkswagen died at the scene. The other driver was not injured. The names of both drivers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The crash happened about 11:48 p.m. at 809 N Alexander St. in Plant City. Police said a 2002 Volkswagen Passat was traveling in the wrong direction – south in the northbound lanes – on N Alexander Street when it struck a northbound tractor/trailer combination vehicle.

Police said it is unknown why the Volkswagen driver was operating the vehicle on the wrong side of the roadway.

Plant City police say they are working to determine what outside factors might have contributed to the crash. No charges are pending for the driver of the tractor/trailer.
