Christopher Douglas Woody, 43, of Largo, died at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he was taken after Thursday’s (April 20) crash.

Police said they were called to the 11800 block of 49th Street N about10:30 p.m. Thursday to answer a complaint about a reckless vehicle. While officers were responding. the complainant, who was following the vehicle, reported that it had begun to travel north in the southbound lanes of 49th and had crashed into the west shoulder of the road, striking a fire hydrant and a tree.

Mr. Woody, who was driving the vehicle, was taken to Bayfront for treatment. Officers said they spoke with Mr. Woody and with doctors at Bayfront who said he was expected to survive and would probably be released from the hospital in the near future.

On Friday, hospital staff told police that Mr. Woody had died as a result of injuries received in the crash. The investigation continues and alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, police said.
