A third driver also suffered minor injuries in the crash, Pinellas deputies said. Impairment appears to be a factor in the crash.

PINELLAS PARK – One driver is dead and an off-duty deputy and a third driver are injured after a head-on crash this morning (March 14) on 66th Street N, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Brittney Hunter, 28, of Largo, died at a hospital where she was taken after the crash. Deputy Jonathan Ferguson, 32, and Richard Peterson, 74, of Pinellas Park, were also taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Both were treated and released.

The crash happened about 3:08 a.m. at the intersection of 126th Avenue N and 66th Street in unincorporated Pinellas Park.

Investigators said Ferguson was off-duty, having finished his shift, and traveling north on 66th Street in the middle lane approaching the intersection at 126nd Avenue. Ferguson was driving a marked 2016 PCSO Chevrolet Tahoe. Peterson was also traveling north on 66th Street in a 2018 Chevy Equinox in the median lane approaching the intersection at 126th Avenue North.

Both Deputy Ferguson and Peterson came to a stop at the red light at the intersection of 66th Street and 126th Avenue.

Ms. Hunter was driving her 2002 Buick LaSabre south in the northbound lanes of 66th Street approaching the stopped vehicles that were facing northbound. Deputies said Ms. Hunter crossed the intersection and hit Peterson’s SUV head-on, which pushed Peterson’s Equinox into Ferguson’s agency Tahoe and rolled Peterson’s vehicle onto the driver’s side.

Impairment does appear to be a factor in the crash, deputies said.

The investigation is continuing.
