The car climbed up a utility pole guide wire, police said.

ST. PETERSBURG – A passenger in a convertible was seriously injured this morning (June 25) when she was thrown from the car during a traffic crash, St. Petersburg police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, suffered life-threatening injuries when she was thrown from the car. She was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where she is listed in stable condition. Sandra Kanpis, 21, who was riding in the back seat, was taken to St. Petersburg General Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash happened about 2:28 a.m. at 22nd Avenue and 68th Street N. Police said Kerwin Mayorga, 21, was driving a 2008 Chrysler Sebring west on 22nd with the top down.

The Chrysler tried to make a left hand turn onto 68th Street, but was going too fast and left the roadway on the southwest corner of the intersection, officers said. The Chrysler drove into to, and then up, the guide wire for a utility pole before falling back to the ground and coming to rest with all of its wheels on the ground.

Sometime during that, the woman, who was in the front passenger seat, was thrown from the vehicle.
