UPDATE: Tarpon Springs Woman Died in Courtney Campbell Crash

Tampa police are investigating the cause of the crash.

TAMPA – A Tarpon Springs woman was killed and another motorcyclist was seriously injured after a Saturday (July 30) motorcycle crash that closed the westbound Courtney Campbell Causeway for several hours.

Leilanie Jessica Ortiz, 26, of Tarpon Springs was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Justin Battiest, 27, of Holiday, was taken to Bayfront Health with serious injuries.

Ms. Ortiz and Battiest both were riding Kawasaki motorcycles westbound on the Courtney Campbell Causeway west of the bridge about 9:17 p.m. when they were involved in a traffic crash. Tampa police said the cause of the crash is being investigated.

One of the motorcycles caught fire as a result of the crash, which damaged a portion of the roadway. The westbound span of the Courtney Campbell Causeway was closed for almost five hours.
