ZEPHYRHILLS – A Tampa woman died this morning of injuries she suffered in a three-vehicle collision on U.S. 301, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Destiny Grooms, 25, of Tampa, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital where she was airlifted after the crash. One of the other drivers, Timothy Hurtt, 32, of Zephyrhills, and his passenger, Willie Wiggs, 53 of Temple Terrace, were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. The third driver, Adrian Vazquez Gonzalez, 32 of Tampa, was taken to Florida Hospital Zephyrhills with minor injuries.

The crash happened about 6:25 a.m. on U.S. 301 at the Zephyrhills Regional Correctional Institution, 2739 Gall Blvd., in Pasco County.

Ms. Grooms was driving a 2011 Nissan Altima north on U.S. 301 approaching Chancey Road. Troopers said Ms. Grooms slowed to turn into the correctional institution. Hurtt, who was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi SUV, failed to slow and rear ended the Nissan.

The impact of the crash propelled the Nissan into the path of the 1995 Nissan pickup truck that Gonzalez was driving south on U.S. 301. The two vehicles collided, causing Ms. Grooms’ car to overturn in the middle of U.S. 301.

The crash blocked traffic until about 8 a.m.
