HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A Valrico man was hit and killed by a train this morning (April 28) when he walked into its path because he did not see or hear the warning signal, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The name of the 28-year-old man from Valrico is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Troopers said he died at the scene.

The crash happened about 9:49 a.m. at State Road 60 and Valrico Station Road in Hillsborough County. Troopers said the man was walking west on the sidewalk on the northside of SR 60 east of Valrico Station Road. As he crossed the railroad track, he failed to observe the downed crossing arms because he was using his cellphone with earphones.

He stepped in front of a locomotive pulling 63 train cars, which was northbound on the tracks.

The stopped train blocked traffic on SR 60 until about 11:53 a.m.
