The crash tied up traffic for several hours, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – The driver of a semi-tractor-trailer was seriously injured this morning (Jan. 4) when his truck fell off an overpass and overturned, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Samuel R.Colon Jr., 49, of Zephyrhills was taken to Florida Hospital Fletcher with serious injuries.

Troopers said the crash happened about 6:46 a.m. at I-75 and Fowler Avenue. Colon was driving a 2007 Mack truck containing recycled debris north on I-75 when another vehicle changed lanes in front of him. Colon steered to the outside shoulder to avoid a collision. The truck hit the barrier wall adjacent to the overpass spanning Fowler Avenue. The truck went over the barrier wall, overturned and fell onto Fowler Avenue below, troopers said.

The debris spilled onto Fowler, obstructing multiple lanes of east-west traffic for several hours. Two other eastbound vehicles were damaged when they struck debris from the truck, troopers said.

Troopers are asking anyone with information about the vehicle that changed lanes in front of the truck to contact the FHP at (813) 631-4020.
