Teen Skateboarder Dies After Brandon Crash

She was on her way to work at Publix when she was hit. She was a junior at Spoto High School in Riverview.

BRANDON – A 17-year-old girl has died of injuries she suffered in a Saturday (March 23) crash on Providence Lakes Road in Brandon, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sky Anna Marie Taylor, a junior at Spoto High School in Riverview, died about 4 p.m. Sunday (March 24) at Tampa General Hospital, where she was taken after the crash. While students are not in school today (March 25). Hillsborough County School officials say they plan to have crisis response counselors available at Spoto High on Tuesday (March 26).

Ms. Taylor was riding her skateboard just before 7 a.m. Saturday in a bicycle lane near South Gornto Lake Road and Providence Lakes Road. She was on her way to work at a nearby Publix when she was hit by
a Volkswagen Passat driven by a 25-year-old woman also on her way to work. (For related story, click here.)

Deputies said Ms. Taylor was wearing all dark clothing at the time of the accident, and an investigation shows that she was riding on the fog line, which separates the bicycle lane from the other lanes of travel. The driver did not see her and struck Ms. Taylor with the right front portion of her vehicle. The driver stopped to call 911.

No charges have been filed for the driver involved in the crash at this time.
