One Teen Dead, One Critical After U.S. 19 Crash in Hernando

One driver turned into the path of an oncoming pickup truck, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HERNANDO COUNTY – One teenager died and another was critically injured in a traffic crash this afternoon (April 18) on U.S. 19 in Hernando County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Seth Leathers, 16, of Weeki Wachee, died at the scene. He was a passenger in a car driven by Garret William Herman, 17, of Brooksville. Herman was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in critical condition. The driver of the other vehicle, Eugene Bonano, 60, of Brooksville, was not injured.

The crash happened about 3:33 p.m. on U.S. 19 at Country Road. Troopers said Herman was driving a 2001 Ford Mustang south on U.S. 19. He tried to turn left on Country Road and traveled into the path of a 2013 Dodge pickup being driven north on U.S. 19 by Bonano.
