Two others were seriously injured in the crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

PASCO COUNTY – A Tampa man died Monday (Sept. 3) in a head-on crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Derek J. McCormick, 65, of Tampa, died at the scene. Christopher J. Santos, 36, of Brooksville, and Dustin W. Sanders, 28, of New Port Richey, were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in serious condition. None of the three were wearing seat belts. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The crash happened about 10:57 a.m. on Prospect Road east of Handcart Road in Pasco County.

Troopers said Mr. McCormick was driving south on Prospect when he failed to negotiate a curve and drove into the oncoming traffic lane. Mr. McCormick’s 2002 Ford van hit head-on a 2011 Mack garbage truck belonging to Progressive Waste and driven by Santos.

After the crash, both vehicles collided with a guardrail and burst into flames.
