POLK COUNTY – A St. Petersburg man died Tuesday (July 11) after his truck left the road and hit two vehicles that were on the shoulder, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Robert Allen Topping, II, 49, of St. Petersburg, died at the scene.

The crash happened about 3:21 p.m. on westbond I-4 east of State Road 33. Troopers said a 2012 Ford F250 and a 2013 Freightliner truck were parked on the shoulder of the road. The Freightliner had a flat tire and the Ford was stopped to help change the tire.

Mr. Topping’s 2006 Isuzu truck left the road and hit the Ford then the Freightliner. It is unclear, troopers said, why the Isuzu left the roadway. The drivers of the Ford and the Freightliner were outside their vehicles changing the tire at the time of the crash. Neither was injured.
