He was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – A St. Petersburg man died Thursday (Jan. 11) of injuries he received when the pickup truck in which he was riding crossed into oncoming traffic, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Richard Johnson, 34, of St. Petersburg, died at Tampa General Hospital where he was taken after the traffic crash. David Chamberlin, 52, of St. Petersburg, and Joshua Allen Murphey, 26, of Largo, who were in the pickup truck with Mr. Johnson, were taken to Tampa General with non-life-threatening injuries. It is unclear who was driving the pickup truck.

Larry Poe, 47, of Thonotosassa, the driver of the other truck, and a child who was with him, were taken to Brnadon Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

The crash happened about 7:30 a.m. on Country Road 579 near Joe Ebert Road. Deputies said that Mr. Johnson was a passenger in a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck that was traveling north on CR 579. As the truck approached Joe Ebert Road, it swerved left into the southbound lane and hit a 2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty truck driven by Poe. Mr. Johnson had to be extricated from the vehicle before he was taken to the hospital.

No charges are pending as of this time, deputies said, but the crash remains under investigation.
