ST. PETERSBURG – A pedestrian died from injuries he suffered when struck by a car Wednesday (Sept. 27), the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Confeser Cruz, 85, was declared dead at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he was taken after the crash.

The crash happened about 8 p.m. in the 6600 block of Fourth Street N. Police said Mr. Cruz was crossing Fourth Street in the middle of the block. He had crossed the southbound lanes and the raised median. As he crossed the northbound lanes, he stepped into the path of a 2014 Kia Optima, driven by Jose Tayagui, 74.

A witness told police that Mr. Cruz was calling out with his hand raised above his head and he was looking in her direction instead of looking at oncoming traffic. The front of the Kia struck Mr. Cruz, throwing him up onto the car and then to the roadway.

Alcohol was not a factor for either party and no charges are expected.
