Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

ST. PETERSBURG – A motor scooter driver died Sunday (Feb. 4) of injuries he received in a traffic crash on 34th Street S, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Don Rowland Hayghe, 51, died at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he was taken after the crash. The driver and four passengers in the other vehicle were not injured.

The crash happened about 11:06 p.m. on 34th at Queensborough Avenue S. Police said Mr. Hayghe was driving a 2007 Kwang motor scooter north  on 34th in the center lane. A
2003 Ford F150 driven by Kendall Denard Boykins, 36, was headed south on 34th Street. The pickup tried to turn left onto Queensborough and traveled into the path of the oncoming motor scooter.

The scooter struck the right front fender of the Ford and went to the pavement. Mr. Hayghe, who was not wearing a helmet, also struck the side of the Ford, causing a massive injury. Police said alcohol may have played a factor in the crash and the investigation is continuing.
