Single-Car Hernando Crash Claims Second Victim

Police | Sheriff | DUI | Drunk

The victim, who died Saturday (Sept. 24), was a passenger in the vehicle. The driver died in the Tuesday (Sept. 20) crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

HERNANDO COUNTY – A Weeki Wachee man died Saturday (Sept. 24) of injuries he received in a single-car crash four days earlier, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Nicholas C. Leitner, Jr., 26, died at Bayonet Point Medical Center where he was taken after the crash. He was a passenger in the 1997 Chevrolet Blazer. The driver, Christine L. Nelson, 32, died at the scene. Both were from Weeki Wachee and neither was wearing a seat belt.

Troopers said Ms. Nelson was driving west on Knuckey Road west of Leisure Lane about 10:52 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, she lost control of the Blazer. The Blazer traveled onto the north shoulder of the road, then back onto the roadway into the eastbound lane where it overturned. Both Ms. Nelson and Mr. Leitner were thrown from the Blazer, which continued to overturn until it hit a fence, then a tree.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, troopers said.
